NEWS » Steve Hollister training September 25th 2010
Sensei‘s Steve Hollister & Hannah Day came over to Newport club for a weekend course. This is the first time that Steve has instructed on the island, and also the first time most of the Newport students had met or trained with him.
The first session on the Saturday was for the lower kyu grades. Working on hip rotation and Kata’s Kihon & Heian-Shodan. When performing the Kata’s the emphasis was every time that you change direction and performing Gedan-Barai (downward block) you had to turn on the flat of you foot not the ball of the foot. Sensei explained that when you turn on the ball of your foot the heel rotates backwards. Meaning some of the energy from the stance is also going backward
Sunday morning again started with the lower Kyu grades, After the warm up the class went straight in to light Randori (Free Sparing), then a quick revision on Kata Heian-Shodan again turning on the flat of the foot. We then practiced basic Gohan-Kumite (5 step) again using the hips on the blocks. We moved onto Sanbon-Kumite (3 step) but with a difference, After the first attack Jodan/Chudan the defender would block then come straight back with another attack and then the first attacker would again block and attack straight away, This was performed three times.
The Black/Brown session was again Kata ANAN with more Bunkai.
Newport Karate would like to thank Sensei Steve for an excellent training weekend and look forward for another visit sometime next year.

Sensei said he was going to do something different in the Black/Brown session Kata ANAN. This is one of the most advanced Kata’s of the Ryuei-ryu style of Karate with flowing movements and no strong Kime (Focus) points. He was teaching the kata the way the Bunkai would be applied.

After a short break Ryan went in front of the grading panel of Sensei's Dewey, O’Donnell and Smith and had to perform basic punches, kicks, blocks & combinations, as well as two Kata’s, Heian-Nidan and Bassia-Dai. The MountbattenCentre Portsmouth was the venue for the 2011 Shotokan of England Karate Union annual championships. Thirteen members entered the competition, five more members and five parents went along to give their support. This was the first time that any of the students had entered an event. Keetan Daish, who has been training for only six months, won the Pee-Wee (Under tens) San-Bon kumite and came second in the Pee-Wee Kata . The junior under and over five foot kumite events are always highly contested but the club did really well with Oliver Austin and Daniel Pegg coming joint third in the under five foot category, With Casey and Jordan Austin achieving joint third in the over five foot. Other members who entered were Zac Harris, Rosie, Isaac, and Katie Wise-Mellor, Ryan Cooper, Michael Austin, Si Taylor and Henry Bull. All did extremely well and it was good experience for the club members which gave them something to build on for the next competition in November.
On May 12th 2011 thirty one members of Newport Shotokan Karate Club took part in a sponsored karate kick. The club has been training at St Georges School Newport since 1996 and its instructors Malc Bradley and Mick Lambert thought it would be a good idea to raise some money to show the clubs appreciation for the schools support over the years. A total of 36,270 kicks were achieved on the night. The target set for each club member, adults and juniors, was 1,000 kicks but a total of 1170 kicks each were achieved in 25 minutes. The total sponsorship raised was £2,600. Awards were given to Keetan Daish for the most money raised for a junior and Amanda Osman for an adult. The money raised will go to St Georges School to help purchase a specialised bike for young people, who are wheelchair users, to ride along with an adult.

Sue Holman the school head teacher said, “We have just started a bike club and we try to include everyone at school but the more complex a young person’s needs are, the more expensive their equipment is. The bikes are £5,000 each so we would obviously not be able to purchase a bike unaided. The school are very grateful to the karate club for all their effort raising this amount of money. To feel the motion of riding on a bike will be a fantastic experience for our young people who are wheelchair users. I can’t wait to see them having fun”.
